Following heavy rain in the catchment areas of Kaulasnala in neighbouring Bidar district of Karnataka, there were steady inflows into the reservoir. The authorities who had closed the floodgates late last night were forced to lift the gates this evening as the water level reached 457.75 metres, against the Full Reservoir Level (FRL) of 458 metres. The authorities opened six gates from 4 p.m. onwards to let out 20,000 cusecs into the river. When reports last came in the authorities had reduced the discharge to 8,000 cusecs. The revenue and police department were put on high alert following sudden rise in the water levels at Kaulasnala project. Villagers on the course of Kaulas in Jukkal and Bichkunda mandals were warned against entering the river waters. Precautionary measures were taken to meet any eventuality. About 13 villages were affected due to flash floods in Kaulasnala project yesterday. Preliminary estimates put the crop damage at 4,000 acres. Standing crops such as green gram, black gram, cotton and paddy were submerged in the flood waters. Revenue and agriculture department officials were assessing the crop damage. Chinna Kodapgal, Pedda Kodapgal, Chinna Dadigi, Pedda Dadigi, Chinna Devada, Pedda Devada in Jukkal mandal and Chinna Takkadpally, Pedda Takkadpally, Sirsamundar and Hasgul received flood waters. Meanwhile, the authorities managed to evacuate the 200 and odd farm labourers stranded on the outskirts of Hasgul. The rescue team with the help of boats shifted the affected villagers to safer places. Search is still on to trace a 11-year-old girl hailing from Hasgul, who is said to have been washed away in the flood waters. With heavy discharge into Kaulas, Manjeera river was receiving good inflows. Due to sudden rise in water levels at Manjeera, about 150 villagers of Pothangal in Kotgir mandal were caught in the flood waters but were subsequently rescued. As Kaulasnala and Manjeera rivers are in spate, water levels at Sriramsagar project on the Godavari in Pochampad are rising steadily. About 40,000 cusecs of floodwaters from Manjeera are joining the SRSP. The current water level stood at 1078 ft, against the FRL of 1091. The SRSP officials said more inflows were expected late tonight. The Minister for School Education, Mandava Venkateshwara Rao, and Minister for Technical Education, Nerella Anjaneyulu, visited the flood-affected Hasgul village and spoke to the villagers. The District Congress Committee (DCC) president and former MLA, S. Gangaram, visited the six flood-affected villages of Madnoor mandal, which were inundated due to floods in Lendi river. Mr. Gangaram said that crops in 3,000 acres were submerged in the flood waters and demanded the authorities to sanction Rs. 8,000 per acre as compensation. The Joint Collector, G. Venkatram Reddy, district Revenue Officer, Komaraiah, Bodhan RDO, Seshadri, and ZP Chief Executive Officer, P. Rama Rao, are camping in the flood-affected Jukkal, Bichkunda and Madnoor mandals overseeing the rescue operations.
