Addressing a press conference here on Friday, he said the padayatra by the CLP leader, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, had little effect on the public because the development turned out by the TDP Government in the last few years was clearly visible. According to Mr. Reddy's prediction, the next elections would be held only in September 2004 and that Chandrababu Naidu would form the next Government with a comfortable majority. Referring to the opinion of Mr. Chandrababu Naidu that the elections would be held around February next year, Mr. Reddy said the Chief Minister must have his own calculations and strategies. On the criticism of the Congress on the Guru Raghavendra canal, Mr. Mohan Reddy said the Congress leaders were unable to stomach the fact that the canal water is going to flow soon. They did not want the project to become a reality, he said adding that the Guru Raghavendra project was the result of his ten-year struggle. Similarly, work on the Mantralayam-Kurnool railway line was likely to start soon since the survey would start immediately. The line would be extended up to Adoni. One should not undermine the importance of the railway line in a backward area like Yemmiganur and Kodumur. The Railways had taken up the survey of Mantralayam first when hundreds of such proposals were pending with it. The Minister said he had lobbied hard for the railway line by taking 30 MPs along with him to meet the Railway Minister, Nitish Kumar. Mr. Mohan Reddy said the TDP had many irrigation projects to its credit in the district. The Opposition parties must clarify on who had completed Varadaraja Swamy project, SRBC, Alaganur Balancing Reservoir, the KC canal modernisation and Gundrevula distributary. He said the TDP government spent a huge amount on "Neeru-meeru'' programme but people could not reap the benefits because of the monsoon failure. The Minister described the free power offer from the Congress as a false one, saying that Punjab had faced great difficulty to honour the free power promise. Political parties could mislead people only once but not every time.
