TIRUPUR, AUG. 22. Hosiery units here are said to have been affected by the "unhealthy competition" in the last two years. The President of the Federation of Hosiery Manufacturers Associations (FOHMA), Mohan P. Kandasamy, told The Hindu that there were nearly 2,000 manufacturers here catering the domestic market. Most of them were involved in production of basic garments. While some manufacturers had an established market in select States, most of them sold their products to wholesale traders. He explained that a few units, that were producing large quantities were offering prize and gift schemes for the wholesale dealers. Further, the price quoted by them was lower than the "normal" price. Others, especially the smaller units, were hit hard by this as they were unable to offer the products at such low prices, he added. In a move to help these units, the association had suggested a "code of conduct" that could be followed by the members. A meeting was planned by the federation next month to find a solution to this problem, he added.
