S.P.Y. Reddy quits Cong.

By Our Staff Reporter

KURNOOL Aug. 22. The Nandyal Municipal Chairman, SPY Reddy, resigned the post and the primary membership of the Congress to enable himself lead an independent agitation for the water rights of the region, especially the assured water for Rayalaseema canals under the Srisailam reservoir.

Addressing a press meet at Nandyal on Friday, Mr. Reddy said he would launch an apolitical struggle for Srisailam waters for the area. "I have resigned from the post to show the people that I am not bogged down by any political ideology and can wage a protracted struggle for the people's cause'', he said.

Mr. Reddy has been demanding impounding of water in the Srisailam reservoir until it reached the head level of SRMC (854 ft). Use of water for power generation or irrigation needs of downstream projects should arise only after meeting the needs of Rayalaseema people. Mr. Reddy said in the name of power generation, the Government had ordered release of water for downstream projects in Coastal Andhra and demanded that the Government to build the right level for the SRMC. He said the Srisailam reservoir was the only source for SRBC, Telugu Ganga and in the changed conditions for the KC Canal too. But the interests of the region were completely neglected, he said. Asked whether he would rejoin the party after achieving the demands, Mr. Reddy said, "I am totally a free man and have no idea to join the party.''
