ASI submits report on excavations

By Our Special Correspondent

LUCKNOW Aug. 22. The Archaeological Survey of India submitted its final report relating to Ayodhya excavations before the Allahabad High Court today.

The report was received by the Officer on Special Duty and Additional District Judge, Narendra Prasad, and will be opened before the three-judge Bench hearing the Ayodhya title suit on Monday.

The 574-page report has been prepared in two volumes of which 274 pages had been devoted to text and the rest to illustrations. The ASI had prepared 15 copies of the report and they were brought to the court in two trunks.

The court had directed the ASI to conduct excavations at the disputed site in Ayodhya to uncover any evidence of the existence of any religious structure at the site before the construction of the Babri Masjid. The submission of the report has brought an end to the ASI operations that started on March 12 this year.

The excavations were mired in numerous controversies and objections as to the manner in which the digging was conducted. The court at one stage expressed its displeasure at the laxity being shown by the ASI in completing the job. Meanwhile, litigants said they would first examine the report as prepared by the ASI and before raising further objections.
