Deadly bowling by Ghouse Baba

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI Aug. 22. Hyderabad paceman Mohammed Ghouse Baba claimed six wickets while there were hundreds from ONGC opener Gagan Khoda and Indian Airlines' Shafique Khan on the second day of the quarterfinal matches in the Sahara-Buchi Babu all-India invitation tournament, here, on Friday.

The contest was interesting on a lively M.A. Chidambaram pitch, where SPIC-TNCA, set a victory target of 213 in 45 overs by Hyderabad, was 12 without loss at stumps. Earlier, left-arm paceman Ghouse Baba proved destructive with six for 28, inclusive of his last spell of 8.3-3-12-4, as the host, beginning the day at 41 for six, was bundled out for 74. Only No. 4 S. Badrinath, who faced 121 deliveries for his 30, put up some fight.

Hyderabad then made 176 for nine in its second innings, No. 5 T. Vinay Kumar top-scoring with 49. Wicketkeeper Ibrahim Khalil (31) and Faiz Ahmed (30) too chipped in. Paceman M.R. Shrinivas grabbed four for 47 for SPIC-TNCA, his first spell reading 7-1-17-3.

Shafique, Khoda hit centuries

Indian Airlines went past TNCA President's XI's first innings score of 164 at CPT-IP, No. 5 Shafique Khan's unbeaten 106 (175b, 8x4, 2x6) and his 109-run fourth-wicket partnership in 33.1 overs with Rashmi Ranjan Parida (60, 139b, 4x4) figuring prominently in a score of 203 for seven.

Skipper Khoda's 135 (213b, 15x4, 2x6) and his 133-run second-wicket association in 40.2 overs with Amit Sharma (71, 125b, 10x4, 2x6) were chiefly responsible for ONGC reaching 314, a 75-run lead over Combined Districts at ICL-Guru Nanak. Pacemen G. Vignesh and R. Jesuraj captured four and three wickets respectively for the Districts. Left-arm seamer Amit Uniyal then scalped two to leave Districts at 29 for two when stumps were drawn.

The scores:

Hyderabad 110 & 176 for nine in 45 overs (T. Vinay Kumar 49, Ibrahim Khalil 31, Faiz Ahmed 30, M.R. Shrinivas four for 47) vs SPIC-TNCA 74 (S. Badrinath 30, Mohammed Ghouse Baba six for 28) & 12 without loss in 3.1 overs, at MAC.
