Beenamol, Anjali to share Khel Ratna

NEW DELHI AUG. 22. As per the recommendations of the Arjuna Awards Committee, the Union Sports Ministry today formally gave its sanction to the list of 21 sportspersons for the Arjuna Award.

The coveted Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award will be shared by athlete K. M. Beenamol and shooter Anjali Vedpathak Bhagwat.

The Governament also announced the winners of the Dhyanchand Lifetime Achievement Award and the Dronacharya Award. The Awards will be presented here by the President on August 29.

The Committee had originally recommended all these names but had been asked to prune it to 15 by the Government.

The Committee, following a reconvened meeting, had submitted its shortened list with a request to consider everyone.

The awardees:

Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award: Anjali Vedpathak Bhagwat (shooting), K M Beenamol (athletics).

Arjuna Award: Anju B. George (athletics), Alok Kumar (billiards and snooker), Mohammed Ali Qamar (boxing), K. Sasikiran (chess), I.M. Vijayan (football), Shiv Kapur (golf), Gagan Ajit Singh (hockey), Ram Mehar Singh (kabaddi), Anwar Sultan (shooting), Suma Shirur (shooting), Montu Ghosh (table tennis), Ravikant Reddy (volleyball), T. Muthu (weightlifting), Palwinder Singh Cheema (wrestling), Nitin Mongia (yachting), Mamta Kharab (hockey), Virender Sehwag (cricket), Saraswati Saha (athletics), Inderpal Singh (rowing), Sujit Mann (wrestling), Ramesh Tikaram (handicap).

Dhyanchand Award: Ram Kumar (basketball), Dharma Singh Mann (hockey), Charles Cornelius (hockey), Om Prakash (volleyball), Smita Yadav (rowing).

Dronacharya Award: M.K. Kaushik (hockey), Renu Kohli (athletics), Jaswant Singh (athletics), E Prasad Rao (kabaddi) and H.D. Motivala (yachting).
