PM requested to send team for beatification

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD AUG. 23. A delegation of the Catholic Bishops Conference of India (CBCI), including Denzil B. Atkinson, MP, has requested the Prime Minister, Atal Behari Vajpayee, to send a team to Rome for witnessing the beatification of Mother Teresa on October 19 by Pope John Paul II.

The delegation, which met Mr. Vajpayee on Friday, made several proposals, including live telecast of the ceremony.

It suggested a 30-minute slot on the DD national network on October 18, for telecast of a special documentary on the Mother.

In a statement, Mr. Atkinson said the CBCI requested that a portrait of Mother Teresa be kept in the central hall of Parliament/central library along with all works on her.

The organisation would contribute to the expenses. The other proposals made included naming a Central scheme for social development after Mother Teresa, establishing a place in a national museum in her memory, depicting her life and activities, and institution of a national award in her memory.
