Woman sentenced for cruelty

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM Aug. 23. A 64-year-old woman, who was found guilty of cruelty against her 26-year-old daughter-in-law who committed suicide in 1995, was on Friday sentenced to six months simple imprisonment and a fine of Rs. 20,000 by the Additional Sessions Judge (Fast Track Court-II), U. Saratchandran.

The accused, Rajamma of Aryanadu, was found guilty of the offence under Section 498 (A) of the Indian Penal Code.

The judge ordered that the fine amount be distributed equally between the two children of the victim, Geeta. Geeta was found hanging at her husband's house on November 11, 1995.
