In a written answer to a question from two members, Nivedita Mane and C.N. Singh on establishment of women courts in the country, Mr. Jaitley said States such as Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Rajasthan and Delhi had set up exclusive courts to deal with cases pertaining to women. Giving the break-up, he said Andhra Pradesh had set up three courts, Karnataka 22, Rajasthan four and Delhi six for women. The Minister said the Centre implemented the scheme for the development of judicial infrastructure under which financial assistance was provided for construction of court buildings and establishment of special courts. At this juncture, Mr. Pandian intervened and raised a supplementary question whether the Centre was aware of a proposal sent by Tamil Nadu Government to the tune of Rs. 140 crores to provide infrastructure to the Madras High Court and all the district courts. The Minister assured Mr. Pandian that the Centre would give a serious consideration to the proposal. Mr. Pandian also drew the Minister's attention to the fact that in Tamil Nadu four courts exclusively to try cases relating to women had already been set up and this information had not been included in the Minister's written answer.
