CPI(M) panel takes up Pillai issue

By Our Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM Aug. 23. The CPI(M) State committee today concluded its deliberations on the document on minorities and began discussing the demand for sterner action against the party veteran, P. Govinda Pillai, for his controversial remarks in a magazine interview.

The party committee, which had publicly censured Mr. Pillai a month ago, appears to be headed for a sterner action, which could come by noon on Sunday. The committee took up the issue only this afternoon. The CPI(M) general secretary, Harkishen Singh Surjeet, left here for Delhi in the afternoon. The State committee discussed the document on minorities this morning. Besides the question of enhancing the party's influence among the minority communities, the discussion also covered issues such as the increasing alienation of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes from the party and ways to check the trend.

The document, which has been prepared with the objective of preparing the party to take on the challenges on the minorities front, would now go to the party State secretariat for incorporation of the views expressed by State committee members.
