Every family should raise trees: CM

VISAKHAPATNAM AUG. 23. The Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu, wanted every family in the State to raise trees, since they bring rain. Mr. Naidu launched a massive programme involving thousands of schoolchildren at the Harithavanam planting project abutting the NH near Aganampudi near here on Saturday, to be maintained jointly the Forest Department and the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant. As many as 40,000 saplings were planted on two plots measuring 35 acres and 15 acres. The project would have a leaf-shaped park and amenities for tourists As many as 1.40 crore trees were planted all over the district on Saturday.

Addressing a public meeting, Mr. Naidu said that his visit to the city was not to just participate in the plantation ceremony but to make the people determined to increase the green cover. Mr. Naidu asked the Chairman-cum-Managing Director of the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant, B.K. Panda, to cover the entire area of steel plant under greenery and adopt the areas outside its premises. The Chief Minister in his speech which sounded like an election address, repeated the grand plans he had for Visakhapatnam and praised the women and the DWCRA groups. The same speech was repeated at meetings organised at three other places. At Aganampudi, the Chief Minister distributed assets to self-help groups under group linkage, worth Rs. 5 crores. The MLA of Parawada, Bandaru Satyanarayana Murthy, who presided. The Minister for Forests, Ch. Ayyanna Patrudu, said every one should plant a sapling on his or her birthday every year and couples should plant two saplings on their wedding anniversary.

The MP of Anakapalle, Ganta Srinivasa Rao, spoke. The Minister for Tribal Welfare, M. Manikumari, MP of Visakhapatnam, M.V.V.S. Murthy, MLAs, Dadi Veerabhadra Rao, P. Chalapathi Rao, who is also Chairman of TTD, P.G.V.R. Naidu and M.V.V. Satyanarayana, the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, A.K. Das, the Collector in-charge, Peeyush Kumar, and the Commissioner of Police, B. Prasada Rao, were present.
