Two killed in lighting strike

KARIMNAGAR AUG. 23. The incessant rain during the last two days followed by lightning claimed two lives in Karimnagar district. The rain paralysed normal life in entire district, yet it brought relief to the farming community with the increase in the ground water table and also filling of tanks and minor irrigation sources in various parts of the district.

In Kothapeta village of Velgatoor mandal, B Vasantha, a seventh class student, died in lightning strike and eight others, including a teacher, were injured. In Pegadapalli mandal of Ramulapalli village, a shepherd, R Mallaiah, who was returning with his sheep, was killed by thunderbolt.

The district recorded an average of 40.2 mm of rainfall till Saturday morning.

The interior mandal of Kataram recorded 135 mms of rainfall, Mahadevpur and Mahamutharam 105 mm each, Ramagundam 102 mm rainfall,, Mallial mandal 108, Pegadapalli 72 mm, Velgatoor 70.2 mm, Bejjanki 50.4 mm, Thimmapur 56 mm, Manakondur 35.2 mm, and almost all mandals in the district received rainfall giving momentum to agricultural activities.

Reports said rivulets and streams were overflowing in several parts of the district disrupting traffic flow. About 18,000 cusecs of flood waters was released into the Godavari from the Kadem project in Adilabad on Saturday evening. The district administration alerted the revenue authorities.
