Letters to the Editor
Sir, The wasteful exercise of no-confidence motion mooted by the Opposition and tabled by Sonia Gandhi ended as expected. The Opposition parties should make constructive contribution for the progress of the country and not indulge in mudslinging.
N. Sundararajan,
* * * Sir, The exercise only succeeded in creating more animosity among the political parties.
S. Kuppuswamy,
* * * Sir, The move proved futile. The Opposition should realise that no-confidence motion is a powerful weapon and should not treat it lightly.
S. Sridharan,
* * * Sir, The no-confidence motion was not altogether futile as it kicked off the campaign for the coming elections in five States.
M. Somasekhar Prasad,
* * * Sir, This refers to Ms. Gandhi's speech during the conclusion of the debate. In his brief reply, the Prime Minister drew attention to certain words in the motion and said as a long-time parliamentarian, he did not relish them. Ms. Gandhi replied that a no-confidence motion is worded to the liking of the Opposition and not to the liking of the Prime Minister. The exchange was not in good taste.
S. Sridharan,
* * * Sir, It is not true that the Opposition indulged in the exercise with an eye on the elections. Its aim was not to dislodge the NDA Government but to force the Prime Minister to respond to the charges levelled against his Government. In fact, it was the BJP which misused the occasion, with many of its leaders raising irrelevant issues.
K. V. Raman,
