Cola controversy

Sir, — The Government's near `clean chit' to Coke and Pepsi has virtually demolished the report of the CSE which highlighted the presence of unacceptably high residue of pesticides. Whether the JPC can deliver the final verdict remains to be seen.

Meanwhile, it is business as usual for the soft drink manufacturers who have hailed the Centre's statement `exonerating' them.

Sir, — It looks like the politicians will have the final say on whether Coke and Pepsi are good for the nation's health. God save science!

Sir, — When the CSE report pointed to the presence of pesticide residue in the colas, the MNCs should have clarified that in the absence of any prescribed norms, they did not monitor the presence of chemicals and that they would do so in future. The statement in Parliament on the issue was the worst instance of verbal quibbling.

Sir, — Sushma Swaraj has said that malathion was not found in any Cola sample. This pesticide is a non-persistent one. She also said that 9 out of 12 samples showed pesticide residues above E.U. norms but below what the CSE reported. This is no consolation.

A. Sreenivasan,
Chennai
