He said the days of the Uttar Pradesh Government were numbered. "It will fall either in the Assembly or because of the Supreme Court case". Mr. Singh expressed confidence that the Opposition parties would be able to provide an alternative government. "Nobody wants mid-term polls." Referring to the Taj corridor case, currently being heard by the Supreme Court, Mr. Singh said the Court's directive to the Central Bureau of Investigation asking it to probe the assets of those in charge of the decision-making within State Government was an indicator of things to come. He questioned the rationale of the Bharatiya Janata Party supporting the Government. Accusing the Centre of having sold the interests of the sugar cane farmers, Mr. Singh was critical of the package announced by the Government. "The package is a huge disappointment, it is a loan and not a grant, and, in actual terms, amounts to very little."
