Mayawati Govt. will fall: Ajit Singh

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI AUG. 24. The former Union Agriculture Minister and president of the Rashtriya Lok Dal, Ajit Singh, told presspersons here today that the Mayawati Government in Uttar Pradesh will fall during the coming Assembly session. "The MLAs are disillusioned, lots of them are in touch with us, this government will fall once the Assembly session begins," he said.

He said the days of the Uttar Pradesh Government were numbered. "It will fall either in the Assembly or because of the Supreme Court case". Mr. Singh expressed confidence that the Opposition parties would be able to provide an alternative government. "Nobody wants mid-term polls."

Referring to the Taj corridor case, currently being heard by the Supreme Court, Mr. Singh said the Court's directive to the Central Bureau of Investigation asking it to probe the assets of those in charge of the decision-making within State Government was an indicator of things to come. He questioned the rationale of the Bharatiya Janata Party supporting the Government.

Accusing the Centre of having sold the interests of the sugar cane farmers, Mr. Singh was critical of the package announced by the Government. "The package is a huge disappointment, it is a loan and not a grant, and, in actual terms, amounts to very little."
