Suicide bid by man foiled

By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI AUG. 30. A drama of sorts was witnessed at Kodambakkam this morning when a man threatened to fall from a transmission tower, reportedly incensed over police denial to install a Vinayaka idol.

Jayavelu climbed up the nearly 100-feet tall tower adjacent to the Kodambakkam bridge at around 10 a.m and threatened to commit suicide if permission was not granted. A team from the Kodambakkam police station rushed to the spot and after prolonged negotiations lasting 45 minutes, Jayavelu climbed down.

Kodambakkam police had denied permission to install a Vinayaka idol near the bridge, as it would obstruct the flow of traffic. A case under Section 309 (attempting to commit suicide) has been registered against Jayavelu.
