SC reserves verdict

NEW DELHI SEPT. 5. The Supreme Court today reserved judgment on a batch of petitions seeking proper implementation of the provisions of the Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (Regulation and Prevention of Misuse) Act banning sex determination and sex selection to prevent female foeticide.

The Act prohibits determination and disclosure of the sex of foetus and also advertisements relating to pre-natal determination of sex. Under the amendments, which came into force on February 14, pre-conception sex selection is also an offence.

A Bench, comprising Justice M.B. Shah and Justice Ashok Bhan, reserved verdict at the conclusion of arguments.

Appearing for the three petitioners — CEHAT, MASUM and Dr. Sabu M. George, social activist — counsel Sanjay Parikh submitted that all the authorities under the Act should implement all the provisions as well as the directions of the court. There should be continuous dissemination of information for proper implementation. The National Monitoring and Inspection Committee should be a permanent feature.
