Swamy questions joint statement

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI SEPT. 5. The Janata Party president, Subramanian Swamy, today criticised the joint statement by eight political leaders objecting to the visit of the Israeli Prime Minister, Ariel Sharon, and termed it as ``hypocritical and not worthy of notice.''

In a statement, Dr. Swamy said the `hypocrisy' of this call was revealed by the fact that these leaders had failed to call upon the Government to simultaneously cancel all defence contracts with Israel, as also various collaboration agreements since 1984 with that country in India's anti-terrorist campaign.

Dr. Swamy said that till 1992 Indian Governments had maintained a clandestine relationship with Israel. ``It is to the credit of Prime Minister, P.V. Narasimha Rao, that he put an end to this charade, and established open diplomatic relations with Israel in 1992. Since then, Indo-Israel relations have flowered.''
