EAMCET qualifying marks cut to fill engg. seats

HYDERABAD SEPT. 6. The Andhra Pradesh Government has reduced qualifying marks in EAMCET-2003 to 40 from 48 out of the aggregate of 160 for immediately filling the 11,268 seats even as counselling ended yesterday.

The Technical Education Minister, N. Anjaneyulu, announced this at a press conference here today.

The extended counselling will be held at five centres from September 11 to 22. A notification for this was issued today. There are 65,876 seats available in the 225 engineering colleges in the State with 49,746 of them coming under the purview of the EAMCET convener. When counselling closed, only 37,973 engineering and 505 pharmacy seats could be filled.

Mr. Anjaneyulu said the relaxation in qualifying marks by 5 per cent (from 30 per cent to 25 per cent) was a one-time benefit and all those who obtained 40 marks would be issued ranks. This would benefit all categories, especially minorities and backward classes, who would now be eligible to compete not only for their own unfilled seats but also that of the open category.

He said there were still 4,822 unfilled seats coming under the BC quota and against them, about 11,500 candidates would get eligibility due to the relaxation. If the BC candidates available were not sufficient, their unfilled seats would be brought under OC category as, otherwise, all of them would go as waste for the year. Similarly, the unfilled seats belonging to the Special Category covering NCC/Sports/children of armed persons quotas totalled 675.

Regarding the new fee structure in the offing, Subba Rao, chairman, the Andhra Pradesh State Council for Higher Education, said a committee with two retired judges of the High Court would be formed.
