B.Ed, nursing candidates under OLIVE scanner

HYDERABAD Sept. 6. Certificates of B.Ed courses and nursing courses offered by different universities in the State would be added to the present Online Verification (OLIVE) project, maintained by the Software Technology Park of India (STPI) in association with the A.P. State Council of Higher Education (APSCHE) and universities for the benefit of the U.S. Consulate in Chennai.

A request to this effect was made by the U.S. Consulate during their interactions with APSCHE officials here recently apparently due to the growing number of students from the education and nursing categories approaching for visas for possible jobs in the United States. The OLIVE presently has authentic information about professional degree-holders in the B.E., B.Tech, B.Pharmacy, MBA and MCA courses.

According to officials of APSCHE, the U.S. Consulate officials wanted the facility given the burgeoning number of students from B.Ed and Nursing courses applying for visas in the last few years as media reports had suggested that several job opportunities existed in U.S. in these two sections. "Qualified teachers and nurses are in good demand is the U.S.,'' says an official adding that several media reports emanating from the U.S. had also suggested this.

Prof. V. Jayarami Reddy, Secretary, APSCHE, says that the universities would be requested to develop the database of these two professionals courses. Perhaps, it would be ready by early next year as Universities have to be careful so that no genuine students' data is missed. "However, we will keep the information on the degrees issued by the State Universities alone'', he points out.

Another request made by the US Consulate officials was regarding taking action against candidates caught with fake certificates. As of now, candidates with fake certificates are let off by the Consulate apparently due to the lack of interest shown by the Chennai police. They wanted the APSCHE and the universities concerned to deal with fake candidates with the help of the local police. However, they were quite happy with the OLIVE project as it had minimised fake candidates since its inception.

The officials responded positively to the request and assured that legal action would be initiated against candidates who enclose fake certificates along with visa applications.
