Letters to the Editor
Sir, The ban on animal sacrifice in temples imposed by the Tamil Nadu Government amounts to the imposition of brahminical values on rituals in temples essentially frequented by non-Brahmins. In States like Assam, Bihar and West Bengal, animal sacrifice is common. Few, if any, including vegetarians, bother about this practice. However, it is true that animal sacrifice as is normally practised in our towns and villages is a ghastly sight. The solution lies not in banning the ritual, but in preventing the sacrifice in public as well as in enforcing standards of sanitation that will not be offensive to public health.
