This Day That Age
Britain's ace test-pilot, Squadron Leader Duke of the Royal Air Force, established on the 7th a new air speed record while flying his flame-coloured Hawker Hunter jet fighter plane off Tangmere in England. Duke attained an average speed of 727.8 miles an hour to capture the world air speed record from Lt. Col. Barnes of the United States Air Force. The official world record was still 698 miles an hour set up by Lt. Col. Barnes. But, in July, Barnes had gone on to set a new mark of 715 miles an hour in an improved Sabre Jet. That second attainment had not been officially confirmed. However, Duke set out to beat the 715 mph mark in two flying attempts made on the 7th.
