A stunning blow

Sir, — I refer to the severe strictures passed by the Supreme Court against the Narendra Modi Government for grossly mishandling the Best Bakery case ( Sept. 13 ) . The use of words such as "Quit if you cannot prosecute the guilty," "the appeal is an eyewash," and "we have no confidence left in the Government" is certainly a stunning blow to the State Government. It is also a wake-up call for the Executive and the Legislature to plug the loopholes in the administration of criminal justice.

Satish Murdeshwar,
Pune

Sir, — The Court's observations point to the state of our helplessness, first before a mighty unhesitant Executive, and then before the Judiciary, which rebukes governments, our own makings. As for the report that Mukul Rohatgi told the Court that in 40 years, none of the rioters had been punished, should that be made a precedent? Will not rioting then become righteous?

R.K. Divakara,
Bangalore

Sir, — Going by the Court's recent rulings on issues of public interest, one cannot but feel that when the other institutions of democracy are deteriorating rapidly, the Judiciary has rekindled people's faith in the system.

V.S. Venkatavaradan,
Salem, T.N.
