Laudable move

Sir, — The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister should be heartily congratulated for banning animal sacrifice in temples. This practice is a shameful superstition. No god or goddess enjoys bloodshed, for compassion alone confers godliness on an entity or individual.

Radha Burnier,

Sir, — Ours is a land which worships the Buddha and Mahavira. The practice of animal sacrifice should have been banned long ago.

G. Ramachandran,

Kuzhithurai, T.N.

Sir, — The Left's opposition to the ban is intriguing. I recall how a veteran communist leader used to be at the spot with his comrades before the traditional ritual began in our temples and stridently register his objection. The Government should also ban the butchering of goats on busy thoroughfares and junctions.

C.R. Narayanan,

Cuddalore, T.N.

Sir, — The Government's aim does not seem to be saving the life of animals as it is not unlawful if they are slaughtered elsewhere. It appears to be to reform the religious belief. A secular government has no business to interfere with the religious belief of a section of the people.

K.S. Ramasubramaniyan,

Chennai
