Letters to the Editor
Sir, The WTO-watchers are not surprised at the collapse of the Cancun meet . It is in the larger interest of the developing nations. Heavy farm subsidies in developed economies result in jeopardising the livelihood security of the farmers of poor countries. In Japan, a milch cow is subsidised at Rs. 80 a day whereas the average daily income of a farmer in a poor country is less than Rs. 45 a day. This inequitable position is unacceptable to the developing societies. As for the Singapore agenda, without a formal resolution on investment at the WTO, the U.S. and the E.U. invested billions of dollars in China, when China was not even a member. The issues, if accepted, will severely affect the developing nations.
