Voice of freedom

Sir, — In the death of Edward Said the world has lost a great humanist. Driven out of Palestine at a tender age by the Zionist immigrants from Europe on the ground that that land was promised to them by God 2000 years ago, he had been an exile since then, hoping that his native land would eventually go to the Palestinians. His was a voice of freedom, human dignity and truth as he perceived it, not absolute, but as an apprehension of what is possible through persistent questioning.

Jacob George,

Changanacherry, Kerala

Sir, — The loss of Prof. Said, the Palestinians' loudest voice in the intellectual arena, is irreparable.

Sir, — I wonder how, in times when terrorism and the use of arms is resorted to as the only means of winning battles, Prof. Said pursued his peaceful ideology with such great impact.

M. Anantharaman,

Chennai
