CPI(M) wins Uttarpara byelection
By Our Special Correspondent
Kolkata
SEPT. 29.
The Communist Party of India (Marxist), the leader of West Bengal's ruling Left Front, has wrested the Uttarpara Assembly seat in Hooghly district from Mamata Banerjee's Trinamool Congress by a margin of 16,178 votes.
The byelection held on September 27 was necessitated by the death of the Trinamool's sitting MLA, Swaraj Mukherjee.
The CPI (M)'s Jyotikrishna Chatterjee polled 66,826 votes while the Trinamool's Indrajit Ghosh secured 50,648 votes, the Congress' Adhir Mukherjee 14,703, and Jamirul Islam of the Janata Dal (S) 3,313 votes.
The Trinamool had managed to get a foothold in the crucial Hooghly district in 2001 snatching Uttarpara from the CPI (M), which had been winning the seat since 1952.
