Go ahead with confidence, CM tells delta ryots

Nagapattinam Oct. 13. The Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, today called upon delta farmers to take up farming operations with the confidence that monsoon would not fail them this time.

Pointing out that her Government was making all-out efforts to assert Tamil Nadu's rights over Cauvery water, Ms.Jayalalithaa said a day would come when the delta farmers would be engaged in paddy cultivation continuously as they were in the past. ``That day is not far off''. She was speaking a government function here.

Charge against DMK

Hitting out at the DMK for taking a ``soft stand'' on the Cauvery issue, ``presumably to stick to the alliance at the Centre and more particularly to retain ministerial berths,'' the Chief Minister said her Government would not leave the farmers in the lurch. The AIADMK Government took firm and concrete steps to assert Tamil Nadu's rights over Cauvery water, whereas the DMK remained ``silent'' even when it was in the seat of power.

Reply to Cong. MP

Responding to suggestions made earlier by the Mayiladuturai Congress MP, Mani Shankar Aiyar, Ms. Jayalalithaa said the Cauvery issue could be solved easily if his party leader directed the Karnataka Chief Minister to release water as their party was in power in that State. Reacting to his word of caution about the ``impending'' danger of crops getting affected by heavy rain in December, the Chief Minister said the Government would act suitably when such things happened. ``Let us think positively. Even if the monsoon spells doom for agricultural operations, the Government would come to the rescue of farmers as it had done in the past''.

Ms. Jayalalithaa laid the foundation stone for various projects to be implemented at a total cost of Rs.158 crores and inaugurated completed projects.

She distributed welfare assistance, worth Rs.7.47 crores to 17397 persons.
