Bihar `link' to stamp paper scam

PATNA Nov. 13. The Rs. 3000-crore fake stamp paper scam rocking Maharashtra has a Bihar connection too. The police here have uncovered a gang, which has admitted to having links with people running the racket in Mumbai.

The Patna police, in the course of raids, have so far seized fake non-judicial stamp papers worth over Rs. 80 lakhs and counterfeit foreign currencies to the tune of $1 million. Eight persons arrested in this connection have been remanded to judicial custody.

The police have decided to send the stamp papers to Nasik and the currencies to the U.S. Embassy for verification.

A diary containing names and telephone numbers of agents in Punjab, Delhi, Haryana, Jharkhand and Maharashtra was recovered during the raids. A printing machine, ink, chemicals and blocks have also been seized. The State Government has directed the Economic Wing of the CID to assist the police in investigations, while the latter have recommended to the Government that the entire probe be handed over to the CID in view of its wide ramifications. A team of the Intelligence Bureau arrived here and interrogated the arrested persons.
