Shevardnadze resigns

By Vladimir Radyuhin

MOSCOW NOV. 23. The Georgian President, Eduard Shevardnadze, has resigned bowing to increasingly aggressive protests by the Opposition against what it claimed was a rigged parliamentary poll three weeks ago. The 75-year-old leader said he was stepping down to avoid bloodshed. The Itar-Tass news agency said the Speaker of the outgoing Parliament, Nino Burdzhanadze, would be the acting President till new presidential elections in 45 days.
