Assam trouble

Sir, — I refer to the article, "Why is Assam burning" ( Dec. 08 ). As pointed out, besides Bangladeshi immigrants, a chunk of people pouring into the State are from the Hindi heartland.

Most of them are poor and corner all the jobs at the lower levels. They also do not assimilate the local culture. This contributes to general resentment in the long run.

Sir, — The fact that there were lakhs of applicants for about 2,000 railway jobs shows how grave the unemployment situation is.

Political parties and people of India should stand united to reverse the economic policies dictated by developed countries. Otherwise, our unity will be shattered.

Sir, — The author poses a question at the end of his article: "Will our leaders find long-term solutions?" Politicians cannot be held completely responsible for every problem in every State.

People must also suggest ways to bring about solutions.
