BJP objects to Sonia's remarks

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI DEC. 10. The BJP today took exception to the Congress president, Sonia Gandhi's remarks about the Prime Minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee's speeches during the campaign, and said the party should accept the verdict of the people instead of finding fault with the electioneering.

Briefing mediapersons here, the BJP spokesman, V. K. Malhotra, trained his guns on Ms. Gandhi's speech at the Congress Parliamentary Party meet on Tuesday, and said it was improper of her to accuse Mr. Vajpayee of lowering the level of the campaign. Instead of levelling such charges, the Congress should introspect, he said.

Referring to the personal remarks, Mr. Malhotra said on all occasions it was the Congress which had fired the first salvo. And not once did Mr. Vajpayee respond, he said, adding that the task of countering the Congress attack was left to the second-rung leadershipof the party.

If the question of Ms. Gandhi's educational qualifications came up in Madhya Pradesh, it was because the Congress questioned the academic background of Uma Bharti, he said.
