RBI free to announce monetary policy: Singh

NEW DELHI, MARCH 21. The Union Finance Minister, Jaswant Singh, today said the Reserve Bank of India as an autonomous body was free to announce its monetary policy irrespective of the coming general elections.

``The RBI is an autonomous institution... It is free to announce the credit policy,'' Mr. Singh told PTI when asked if the RBI could announce the lean season credit policy for six months beginning April 2004 in view of the elections.

He, however, refused to comment on the propriety of the RBI announcing the policy in end-April in the midst of elections.
