Mayawati denies understanding with BJP

By Our Staff Reporter

COIMBATORE, MARCH 21. The Bahujan Samaj Party leader, Mayawati, today refuted the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, Mulayam Singh Yadav's charge that her party had a "secret understanding" with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

(At an election meeting in Meerut on Saturday, Mr. Singh had alleged that the BSP had entered into an "understanding" with the BJP to topple his Government in exchange for dropping pending cases against Ms. Mayawati.)

Reacting to a question on this from presspersons here, Ms. Mayawati said Mr. Singh's Government was already shaky. Since it had been formed with the help of the BJP, Muslim leaders in the ruling Samajwadi Party were crossing over to the BSP, she said.

"We have decided to go it alone in the polls and we will try and win as many seats as possible," Ms. Mayawati, who was here to address her party's election meeting, said.
