The Dehra Dun connection
DEHRA DUN,
APRIL 6.
Sri Lanka's new Prime Minister, Mahinda Rajpakse, has a long-standing association with Dehra Dun. He is connected with the human rights centre of the Doon-based non-governmental organisation, the Rural Litigation and Entitlement Kendra (RLEK), for the last five years.
Avadhesh Kaushal, chairperson of RLEK Human Rights Centre, said: "There are celebrations at the centre over Mr. Rajpakse's appointment as it means that new opportunities will emerge in India-Sri Lanka relations."
He said Mahinda had been visiting Dehra Dun frequently ever since he became involved with the centre's ten-month course on human rights, which focuses on establishing a human rights culture in SAARC countries. It had been Mr. Rajapakse's responsibility to nominate two candidates from Sri Lanka each year. "Mr. Rajapakse is also a professor emeritus at the centre. We are sure that he will be soon visiting the Doon Valley and the RLEK human rights centre," Mr. Kaushal added.
