Faculty Council of IIM-C moves High Court

KOLKATA, APRIL 28. The Faculty Council of the Indian Institute of Management (Calcutta), which vociferously protested the Government Order on fee reduction, today filed a writ petition before the High Court challenging the legality of the March 26 board meeting of the Institute.

The Faculty Council Dean, Ashis Bhattacharya, told PTI that the board meeting of March 26 was not legal as it was violative of the Memorandum of Association & Rules of the Institute.

He said at the board meeting, which authorised the chairman, Y.C. Deveshwar, to draft a resolution pertaining to fee reduction issue, the Human Resource Development Ministry had appointed nominees which was not in consonance with the rules of the Institute.

The Faculty Council has also decided to charge fees at old rates from students. However, in case the Supreme Court, where the matter was now sub judice, gives a ruling ordering fee reduction, then the excess money would be refunded to students at SBI interest rates.

The Faculty Council also decided not to avail of the Rs. four crores provided by the Ministry till the disposal of the case. Mr. Bhattacharya said the Council was also critical of Mr. Deveshwar who was in favour of the Government Order.

No decision on fee issue: IIM-I

Meanwhile, the Indian Institute of Management-Indore today said its Board of Governors had not taken a decision to charge the full fee from the current batch of students. It will keep Rs. 30,000 with the Institute's account and the remaining in a non-lien account to be adjusted subject to the Supreme Court's decision.

He was responding to reports which said that the IIM-I would charge full fee and out of it keep Rs. 30,000 in the Institute's account and the remaining in a non-lien account.

``We clarify that no such decision has yet been taken by the Board of Governors of the IIM-I in this matter," the IIM-I director, S.P. Parashar, said. — PTI
