Indo-U.K. panel to monitor AJT deal
By Our Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI,
APRIL 28.
In an attempt to avoid the glitches witnessed in previous technology transfers involving military equipment, India and the United Kingdom have decided to set up a panel to monitor the sales, production and training of pilots for the advanced jet trainers to be purchased from British Aerospace. The decision was taken at the eighth meeting of the Indo-U.K. defence consultative group (DCG) meeting, which ended here today. The multi-billion dollar deal was signed recently after a selection process lasting 18 years.
The DCG already has three sub-groups dealing with military issues, defence equipment and defence technology & research. It also agreed to address issues relating to pending equipment and production. The U.K. also wanted to raise the level of discussion at these annual DCG meetings to cover strategic and security interests.
Besides discussing measures to promote greater familiarisation between the armed forces of both countries, the meeting also focussed on developing the potential for collaboration in the manufacture of defence equipment and research projects.
