LUCKNOW, APRIL 28. The Congress president, Sonia Gandhi, today launched a scathing attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party for its "failures to fulfil the promises made during the last Lok Sabha elections." The BJP had promised su-raj (good governance). It had also vowed to eradicate corruption, remove unemployment and take steps for empowerment of women. But its record proved that it had failed miserably, Ms. Gandhi said. Addressing an election meeting in the Mohanlal Ganj Lok Sabha constituency, 35 km from here, Ms. Gandhi said that the Vajpayee Government was responsible for the all-round deterioration in the country and that the people's problems had increased during the present regime. Prices were rising steadily and nothing was being done for the unemployed youth. "How long can people tolerate such an abysmal situation? People must take united action to dislodge this Government." Ms. Gandhi said that the politics should be based on principles. "The Congress had seen many ups and downs but the party had never forgotten its ideals and never compromised on its principles. If returned to power, the Congress will sincerely try to serve the people, as the basic purpose of politics for the party is public service," she said. For the Congress the main issue was empowerment of the people. "The Congress will fulfil every promise made in its election manifesto. It will keep in mind everyone in society and lead the country to the path of progress and development with the support of the masses," she said.
