Literacy award for Sudha, Radha

NEW DELHI, JULY 6. Women's literacy activists, Sudha Murthy and Radha Devi, were today given the `Lakshmi N. Menon & Sushila Nayyar Literacy Award.'

While Ms. Sudha, who is the wife of the Infosys mentor, N.R. Narayana Murthy, has contributed to the cause of literacy as the chairperson of the Infosys Education Society, Ms. Radha Devi has been active in women's literacy movement in Orissa.

Giving away the award, instituted in memory of the founder-members of the All-India Women's Conference, the Delhi Chief Minister, Sheila Dixit, said women should rely on self-help and make efforts to spread literacy among them if their demands such as 33 per cent reservation in legislatures were to be met.

Describing literacy and health as the two pillars on which the welfare of women rest, Ms. Dixit said ``however, literacy itself can contribute in a big way towards improvement of women's health.''

On the occasion, a training-cum-production centre was also inaugurated at the Council premises here by the Chinese Ambassador, Hua Jun Duo. Around 160 sewing machines donated by the Chinese Embassy have been installed at the centre.

Speaking to PTI after inaugurating the centre, the Chinese Ambassador said, ``We acknowledge the importance of Indian women in the country's social sphere. And we hope our humble contribution would help the AIWC in their efforts towards betterment of women in India.''
