Fellowships for scribes

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI, JULY 6. The National Foundation for India (NFI) has announced eight fellowships of Rs. 1 lakh each under the National Media Fellowship Programme. The fellowships are meant to facilitate a "more informed dialogue" and encourage publication of "well-researched articles" on development issues, says a statement from NFI.

"The programme is for young, mid-career and sensitive journalists who are interested to take time off from their routine beats to research and publish articles on a wide range of issues of importance to ordinary Indians," it said. This includes the problems of the deprived people, environmental matters and other major social problems, especially with respect to issues of gender inequality.

Two fellowships are for projects with specific emphasis on conditions in rural areas. One fellowship is exclusively for a photojournalist.

The selected fellows are expected to publish at least 10 articles or reasonable number of photographs on the chosen subject during the period. Two or three would have to be in-depth research articles or photo essays.

The last date for receipt of applications is August 12, 2004. Details can be obtained from the Programme Assistant, National Foundation for India Core 4A, Upper Ground Floor, India Habitat Center, Lodhi Road, New Delhi 110 003. Tel: 011-24641864; Email: info@nfi.org.in.
