Manmohan condoles death of Hiren Mukherjee

NEW DELHI, JULY 31. The Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, today condoled the death of Hiren Mukherjee. "He was one of the most distinguished parliamentarians of our time whose oratorical skills not only influenced the course of many debates in Parliament, but were also appreciated by Pandit Nehru," he said in his tribute to Mukherjee who died in hospital in Kolkata yesterday.

Recalling the distinguished parliamentary career of the veteran Communist leader who had been member of Parliament for a quarter of a century from 1952, Dr. Singh said: "He was a national leader of great standing and whose qualities are worthy of emulation today.

Doughty champion

The Vice-President, Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, in his condolence message to Mukherjee's son Abhijit Mukherjee, said that Mukherjee was an outstanding parliamentarian who was exceptional by any standard of reckoning.

In Mukherjee's death, the country has lost one more link with India's glorious past, he said. — PTI
