Raja-Lakshmi Award for Sudha Murty

CHENNAI,
AUG. 14.
The Raja-Lakshmi Award for 2004 will be presented to Sudha Murty, chairperson, Infosys Foundation, in recognition of her outstanding contribution to social work. The award carries a purse of Rs. 1 lakh, a citation and a memento. It will be presented to Ms. Murty on November 19.
The awardee will also receive the Dr. K.V. Rao and Dr. Jyoti Rao Award of $2000 in association with the Telugu Fine Arts Society, New Jersey, United States.
Besides being instrumental in the formation of the software company, Infosys, Ms. Murty is a leading figure in philanthropy and social work. The projects taken up by the Infosys Foundation, formed around eight years ago, include construction of orphanages, girls' hostels, students' homes, relief shelters in several parts of Orissa and destitute centres all over the country. It has also built around 1,000 toilets, mainly in the slum areas of Bangalore.
The Raja-Lakshmi Award is an annual award instituted to promote arts, literature, science, humanities and other intellectual pursuits and to honour distinguished personalities in these fields.
