New chief for U.N. Population Fund in India

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI, AUG. 14. Hendrik van der Pol from the Netherlands has been appointed the new Representative in India of the United Nations Fund for Population Activities (UNFPA). He has come here — to serve his first professional tenure in an Asian country — after working as the UNFPA Representative in Guatemala.

``His appointment as the UNFPA Representative in India aims to effectively strengthen the collaboration between the Indian Government and the UNFPA,'' said an official release.

While in Guatemala, Mr. Van der Pol is said to have played an important role in integrating issues such as reproductive health, family planning, sexual education and population and development in the Law on Social Development.

This was achieved with the support of civil society groups, including the main churches, both Catholic and Protestant. He also contributed to incorporating population issues into the curricula of pre-primary and primary schools.
