Water level rises in Pareechu river

By Our Diplomatic Correspondent

NEW DELHI, AUG. 14. The water level in the Pareechu river in Himachal Pradesh, downstream of the artificial lake created by a landslip in Tibet, rose today, raising concerns about the possibility of the "dam" bursting and causing heavy flooding.

The exchange of information between Chinese authorities and the Government of India continued today as well in a bid to deal with the situation created by the landslip across the Pareechu river. Official sources told this correspondent that the discharge of water from the lake was on the rise as a consequence of which there had been an increase in the water level downstream. First reports of "overflow" from the lake had come in on Thursday. A number of contingency measures have been taken by the Himachal Pradesh Government to deal with any contingency.
