Manipur situation

Sir, — What started off as protests over the death of Manorama Devi in Manipur have spiralled into a Statewide expression of anger and distrust. In a State where people felt they were not getting enough attention from the Centre, the incident added fuel to fire. The Centre should have acted swiftly and impartially to contain the fallout.

On the other hand, the Centre finds itself mired in its own contradictions vis-à-vis the Prevention of Terrorism Act and the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act. While it is looking at repealing POTA, it wants to retain AFSPA.

Ram Viswanathan,
Chennai

Sir, — The Centre's decision to wait and watch the situation in Manipur even when the State is in turmoil shows its laidback attitude. Does it want to wait to watch more Manipuris dying either because of the AFSPA or because of protests against it?

Sh. Ratnamani Singh,
New Delhi

Sir, — The Centre's handling of the situation in Manipur leaves much to be desired. It should not end up making Manipur another Kashmir.

Hari Murali Krishna,
Tennessee, U.S.

Sir, — The agitation of the Manipuris has roots in the feeling that they have been oppressed. Since resorting to armed operations has not yielded much success, it is time for the Centre to explore alternatives to address the grievances of the people.

Sutirtha Sahariah,
Gurgaon, Haryana
