Sir, This refers to the article, "Reservations about reservation" (Aug. 16). The writer uses intellectual jargon very effectively to derail the Dalit movement. She overlooks the ground reality that there are many places in India where Dalits are still not allowed to draw water from public ponds and wells, and where Dalits are lynched for skinning a dead animal (Jhajjar, Haryana, 2003).

Sir, The article should make the Government rethink reservation. Instead of indulging in political gimmicks with promises of reservation that "prove profitable when it comes to garnering votes," an in-depth study should be undertaken by experts regarding the impact of the policy followed so far. It should examine whether reservation has really benefited the target groups.
