Letters to the Editor
Sir, The Shiv Sena leaders, Bal Thackeray and Manohar Joshi, should not have stooped to the level of striking an effigy of Petroleum Minister Mani Shankar Aiyar with slippers to register their protest against his remarks on Savarkar. That Mr. Joshi, who held the prestigious post of Lok Sabha Speaker once, should await his turn with a slipper in hand and a broad smile on his face is appalling. S. John Martin, Thanjavur, T.N.
Sir, Mr. Aiyar's remarks about Savarkar need to be condemned. But there are civilised ways of protesting. The Shiv Sena's `retaliation' was worse than Mr. Aiyar's stand. My appreciation to The Hindu for publishing the photo on its front page (Aug. 28). M.R. Srinivasan, Chennai
Sir, It is unfortunate that Sonia Gandhi has been needlessly dragged into the Savarkar controversy. The BJP, having lost the elections and the chance of harping on a `foreign' Prime Minister, is apparently running out of issues. S. Baswaraj, Hyderabad
