AIDWA to fight discrimination
NEW DELHI,
OCT. 13.
Highlighting the gender prejudices that women have to fight both within and outside the home, the All India Democratic Women's Association (AIDWA) today called for equal opportunities for the ``fairer sex''.
In a resolution adopted here today on the occasion of the 21st death anniversary of its first president, Ashoka Lata Jain, the AIDWA demanded that women be given equal job opportunities and property rights besides calling for a campaign against dowry and forced marriages. ``Girls are discriminated against even before they are born, through the practices of sex-selective abortion,'' the AIDWA general secretary, Brinda Karat, said.
With unequal treatment meted out to them both within and outside the home, rising cases of eve-teasing and sexual assault, the criticism faced by them for speaking out or dressing in non-traditional ways, women today have to tackle numerous problems, Ms. Karat said.
The meeting ended by a call for formation of area-level committees of young girls to deal with the various problems and issues that concern them.
