Bengal hit most by arsenic pollution
By Our Special Correspondent
KOLKATA,
OCT. 14.
West Bengal tops the list of affected zones in the Indian subcontinent with regard to arsenic contamination of drinking water sources, the Union Minister for Water Resources, P.R. Das Munshi, said today.
Participating in the National Conference on Water Quality Issues here, Mr. Das Munshi said that out of the 269 blocks surveyed in West Bengal, 53 had been found to be critical, 22 blocks semi-critical and the remaining 188 found to be safe.
He said problems arising out of arsenic and fluoride contamination could not be handled by a State alone. "To solve such problems, we will have to supplement the State's efforts by providing the requisite support and show adequate concern.''
Earlier, the Chief Minister, Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, criticised the Centre for allocating Rs. 1,000 crore in the last general budget for setting up of a desalination plant in Tamil Nadu.
"The coastal States should have received a fare share of that fund,'' the Chief Minister said.
He called for a rational policy for funding quality projects relating to water.
